Jackie Walters Tribute

There was a planting of 2 trees at a small gathering at Marhamchurch Primary School. One was in memory of our late Queen Elizabeth II. The second was to remember Jackie Walter who gave so much to our community. A memorial plaque was donated from funds raised at our Food Fair in June.

Marhamchurch Enjoys The Queen's Platinum Jubilee Celebrations

At the start of the celebrations, we saw Councillors and friends building a huge bonfire beacon on Thursday afternoon. Wood was donated by parishioners and it took several hours for the group, plus a tractor, to assemble the beacon!

At 9.35pm there was a lovely welcome from two pupils from Marhamchurch School; a rousing ‘God Save our Gracious Queen’ from the crowd; and a short piece of music written especially for the event, which was played beautifully on a flute by another school pupil. The fire was then ably lit by Tony Perry, Chairman of Marhamchurch Parish Council, and within a few minutes it was blazing and could be seen for miles. The beacons of both Dizzard and Whitstone could also be seen.

The community came in their hoards making the evening a great success. They enjoyed not only the spectacle of the beacon, but also barbecue food that was laid on by the local Scouts and a great evening of Jubilee spirit.

Friday saw the return of the popular Marhamchurch Food Fair; bands played over the weekend at The Bullers Arms and on Saturday night The Weir hosted live music.

Sunday saw the culmination of events with a huge Community Jubilee Lunch in the Revel Field. Despite a gloomy weather forecast over 150 parishioners, families and visitors turned up on the field with contributions of plates of amazing savoury and sweet food.

The loan of a marquee and many gazebo's meant that all could enjoy an afternoon of friendship, food and fun - despite a little drizzle!

A huge thank you must go to Marhamchurch Parish Council for their organisation over the long weekend; to the Bullers Arms and The Weir for the live entertainment; Peter and Miriam Green for organising the Food Fair and to everyone who made the Jubilee weekend a huge success - from the loaning of the field for the beacon, putting things up, taking things down etc, etc. It certainly was an amazing Jubilee Party from Thursday to Sunday!

Community Event - unveiling of war memorial plaque

Following the traditional Remembrance Day Service at Marhamchurch on Sunday 10th November, Marhamchurch Parish Council held a ceremony to unveil a plaque commemorating the Airship Station at Langford Hill during World War I, kindly donated by The Airfields of Britain Conservation Trust.

The sun was shining, and a great number of people attended the event, including The Mayor of Bude and Stratton Town Council, Bob Willingham and his special guest Simon Sherrard, the Deputy Lord Lieutenant of Cornwall.

Marhamchurch welcomed parishioners of Marhamchurch Parish and those, including their Chairmen, from neighbouring parishes of Poundstock, Kilkhampton, Launcells, Bude and Stratton and Week St Mary along with Mr Nigel Kivell, who lived at Langford Hill, who unveiled the plaque.

The airfield, which saw significant activity in the final months of World War 1, was sited in the wooded area in a field in front of Langford Hill Manor, 2 miles away on the road to Week St Mary. It was set up as an important out-station to work alongside the main Cornish Airfield at Mullion which is now Culdrose. Photographs, maps and more details were displayed inside the Bray.

Thanks to all involved in making the day such a success.
